The idea behind 21 Oaks Capital dates back to 2017 — the year of the ICOs, when the mainstream is first deliberately introduced to blockchain technology. In this period Germany's first listed public company built around distributed ledger technology is founded, Advanced Blockchain AG; Michael Geike is part of that community.
Co-founder Edgar Heimbach — for many years an institutional equity broker — takes notice. For an institutional project it was still too early at the time: the BaFin regulatory framework was missing.
That changes in 2021. Under Germany's Fund Location Act, institutional investors may allocate up to 20 % of their capital to digital assets. Steffen Fuchs and Harald Sporleder join. The goal: to give institutional investors access to digital assets in a traditional way — as a classic fund structure, managed in Germany and regulated by BaFin.
21 Oaks Capital sees itself as a bridge between the traditional “old” world of finance and the innovative “new” world of distributed ledger technologies.
