Crypto Market Crash Wipes Out Over $500 Billion in Value

18 October 2025·1 min read

What happened

The crypto market suffered a sharp downturn on Friday after U.S. President Trump announced a 100 % tariff on Chinese imports. Within hours, total crypto market capitalization dropped by more than 10 %, erasing over $500 billion in value. Liquidations exceeded $20 billion during the event – marking the largest single liquidation wave in the history of blockchain markets.

What’s the news

The crash once again exposed the crypto market’s vulnerability to high leverage and thin liquidity. Many traders were forcibly liquidated through auto-deleveraging (ADL) mechanisms – even profitable positions were closed. Centralized derivatives platforms were hit hardest, as they operate with extreme leverage and limited market depth, triggering cascading sell-offs as positions were liquidated.

DeFi protocols such as Aave, on the other hand, remained stable due to their automated, on-chain collateralized liquidation systems. These mechanisms absorbed the shock more effectively, reinforcing DeFi’s role as a resilient and transparent layer of market infrastructure.

Good to know

  • The event highlights that, despite institutional inflows and spot ETFs, crypto markets remain highly sensitive to leverage and liquidity risks.
  • The Fear & Greed Index dropped to its lowest level since April.
