Uniswap - A DeFi Pioneer Announcing Layer-2 "Unichain"

15 October 2024·2 min read

Uniswap, a pioneer in decentralized finance (DeFi), has processed over $2.4 trillion in trading volume over the last six years. With millions of users and nearly half a billion completed transactions, Uniswap remains the largest decentralized exchange (DEX) in the world. Uniswap revolutionized crypto trading by introducing Automated Market Makers (AMMs), which eliminate the need for order books or market makers. Instead, Uniswap uses liquidity pools, where the formula x * y = k describes the constant product mechanism. In this formula, x represents the amount of one token in the pool (for example, Token A), while y represents the amount of the other token (for example, Token B). The value k is a constant that ensures the product of the two token amounts (x and y) always remains the same, regardless of trading activity in the pool. The formula automatically adjusts token prices: when the amount of one token in the pool decreases, its price increases, and vice versa.

What’s the news

To reduce Ethereum's high gas fees and improve scalability, Uniswap has announced Unichain, its own Layer-2 solution, built on the Optimism Stack. Unichain will process transactions directly on its own dedicated Layer-2 network and periodically settle them on the Ethereum mainnet, significantly reducing transaction costs and improving transaction speed. This will make decentralized trading smoother while maintaining the security through the Ethereum mainnet.

As part of the Optimism Superchain, Uniswap is working with OP Labs to ensure native interoperability. This will allow different Layer-2 chains within the Superchain to communicate with each other instantly, all within a single block. For users, this means they can trade and move assets between various chains without needing to worry about the technical details of the chain they are using.

Good to know

To bring the next generation of markets on-chain, DeFi needs to be faster. Unichain will launch with one-second block times and will soon introduce 250ms sub-blocks, which will make the user experience feel instant. Faster blocks will also increase market efficiency and reduce value lost to Miner Extractable Value (MEV).

This speed improvement is made possible through a block builder developed in collaboration with Flashbots, which uses a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). The TEE not only improves transaction speed but also ensures greater transparency in transaction ordering. While TEEs do not replace decentralized consensus, they offer significant improvements in trust and security compared to other block builders.
