Altcoin
Altcoin is the umbrella term for every cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.
Explained simply
The word combines "alternative" and "coin". It covers everything from Ethereum to tiny projects with no substance at all. Accordingly the term says little about quality.
A classification by purpose is more useful: platform coins (Ethereum, Solana), payment coins, stablecoins, infrastructure tokens or pure objects of speculation.
From the familiar world
Like "small caps" on the stock exchange: the term covers solid mid-sized companies as well as penny stocks. The label alone says nothing about the business behind it.
An example
Of the tens of thousands of listed altcoins, the ten largest account for the vast majority of total market value. The rest is a very long tail of small and often short-lived projects.
Why it matters
When clients mention "a coin" an acquaintance recommended, the useful question is: what purpose does it serve, and who actually uses it? This framing protects against fads.
