Memecoin
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency with no technical or economic purpose whose value lives on attention and community alone.
Explained simply
Memecoins often start as a joke or around an internet trend. They have no special technology, no use case and no reserve. Their price rises and falls with attention on social media.
Some have nonetheless been around for years and at times reach multi-billion valuations. That says more about the dynamics of attention than about the coin.
From the familiar world
Trading cards, or tulip bulbs in the 17th century: the price comes not from any income but purely from many people wanting to join in. Until they no longer do.
An example
Dogecoin launched in 2013 as a parody. For years its price moves were heavily influenced by individual tweets from prominent people.
Why it matters
Memecoins are what many clients mean when they say "crypto is gambling". Clearly separating them from infrastructure networks and regulated products removes the casino flavour from the whole topic.
To pass on
„Memecoins are the funfair of the crypto world. You may visit, but do not confuse it with your portfolio.“
