DePIN
DePIN stands for networks in which many individuals provide physical infrastructure such as radio antennas, storage, sensors or computing power and are paid in tokens for it.
Explained simply
Traditionally a corporation builds the infrastructure: mobile masts, data centres, charging stations. In DePIN thousands of individuals and companies provide small building blocks, coordinated via a blockchain.
Anyone operating a building block (say an antenna on the roof or a graphics card in a PC) receives tokens as payment. Anyone using the infrastructure pays with tokens. The smart contract handles the accounting.
The model suits areas where many small locations beat a few large ones: wireless networks, sensors, distributed storage, computing power for AI.
From the familiar world
The energy transition with solar panels on private roofs: instead of a few large power plants, millions of small installations feed into the grid and are paid per kilowatt-hour. DePIN applies this principle to wireless, storage and computing.
