Proof of stake (PoS)
Proof of stake is the consensus method in which deposited capital serves as the ticket: those who pledge coins may confirm blocks and risk the pledge if they cheat.
Explained simply
Instead of computing power, what counts is the stake. Participants known as validators deposit coins as collateral. The network randomly selects, weighted by stake, who proposes the next block.
Honest work earns a reward from fees and newly created coins. Cheating or going offline costs part of the stake ("slashing").
Ethereum has used proof of stake since 2022. Energy consumption is orders of magnitude below proof of work.

A security deposit: anyone wanting to take on responsibility as a manager puts down money. Do the job properly and you get paid. Embezzle something and the deposit is gone. The incentive to be honest sits in your own capital.
An example
On Ethereum many millions of ether are deposited as stake. A validator needs 32 ether; smaller investors participate via pools or providers.
Why it matters
Proof of stake is why most newer networks need hardly any electricity, and the basis for "staking", which clients encounter as an interest substitute. Both are worth being able to explain.
