Proof of work (PoW)
Proof of work is the consensus method in which computational effort serves as the ticket: only those who can prove they did the work may append a block.
Explained simply
The idea: cheating should be more expensive than honesty. Under proof of work anyone proposing a block must have solved a hard computational puzzle. That costs electricity and hardware.
Anyone trying to insert an invalid block has wasted the effort because the other nodes reject the block. Honest participants are rewarded with new coins.
Bitcoin has used proof of work since 2009. It is considered the most battle-tested method but consumes a lot of energy.
From the familiar world
A wax seal on a letter: creating it takes effort, checking it is easy. Everyone can see at once whether the seal is genuine. Proof of work is a digital wax seal whose creation requires computing power.
An example
To manipulate the Bitcoin blockchain an attacker would have to control more than half of global mining power permanently. The cost would run into many billions of dollars.
Why it matters
Proof of work is why Bitcoin is considered particularly secure, and at the same time the reason for the energy debate. Both belong in an honest assessment.
To pass on
„Proof of work means anyone wanting to write in the ledger must first prove they did the work. That makes cheating unaffordable.“
