Crypto ETP / Bitcoin ETF
A crypto ETP is an exchange-traded security that tracks the price of a cryptocurrency and is physically backed by it; in the US the equivalent is called a spot ETF.
Explained simply
Instead of buying and holding bitcoin themselves, investors buy a security on the exchange that represents a fixed amount of bitcoin per unit. A custodian holds the coins, the security sits in a regular brokerage account.
In Europe these products are called ETP, ETN or ETC because under EU law a fund (ETF) may not hold a single asset only. In the US genuine spot ETFs have been approved since January 2024.
The product's price follows the cryptocurrency's price, including all its swings. On top come running costs and issuer risk.
From the familiar world
A gold ETC: you buy a security representing gold in a vault instead of storing bars at home. A Bitcoin ETP is the same principle with bitcoin in the custodian's vault.
An example
US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded inflows in the high tens of billions in their first year, the most successful launch of any ETF category ever.
Why it matters
ETPs are the route by which Bitcoin enters traditional portfolios: eligible for brokerage accounts, exchange-traded, with a regulated custodian. Important for advisers: the product is convenient, but the underlying's price risk remains in full.
