Peer-to-peer (P2P)
Peer-to-peer means two participants deal directly with each other, with no intermediary in between.
Explained simply
A "peer" is an equal. In a P2P network there is no central server everything passes through. Every participant is both a user and part of the infrastructure.
Bitcoin was explicitly described in its founding paper as a "peer-to-peer electronic cash system": money that goes directly from person A to person B.
From the familiar world
Cash is peer-to-peer: you hand over a note and nobody has to approve or book the handover. A card payment, by contrast, passes through the merchant's bank, the card network and your bank.
An example
Two companies in different countries settle an invoice directly in a stablecoin. The payment reaches the recipient within minutes, with no correspondent banks along the way.
Why it matters
P2P is the basic principle that separates blockchain networks from traditional payment systems. It explains why transfers work around the clock and across borders.
To pass on
„Peer-to-peer is cash for the internet: straight from hand to hand, with nobody sitting in between.“
