The private key is the password to your blockchain balance; the seed phrase is its backup in the form of 12 or 24 words.
Explained simply
Every balance on a blockchain belongs to a key pair. The public key is like an account number and anyone may see it. The private key is like the signature: only it can move funds.
Because a private key is a long, unwieldy string of characters, wallets translate it into a list of 12 or 24 English words, the seed phrase. Whoever has these words can restore the wallet on any device.
That is freedom and responsibility at once: there is no hotline that resets a lost key.
From the familiar world
The seed phrase is like your PIN and your TAN list rolled into one, but without a bank in the background. Lose it and nobody can reissue it. If someone else enters it, they can spend.
An example
A user writes his 24 words on paper and puts them in a safe deposit box. Years later he sets up a wallet on a new phone, types in the words, and his entire balance is available again.
Why it matters
Responsibility for the key is the main reason many investors choose regulated products (funds, ETPs) with professional custody. Being able to explain this takes the fear out of the topic.
