Tokenomics
Tokenomics describes a token's rules of the game: how many exist, who gets them when, and what they are needed for.
Explained simply
The word combines "token" and "economics". It refers to the economic rulebook behind a token: total supply, issuance pace, share for team and investors, lock-up periods and the actual use.
Good tokenomics are transparent and create demand through usage. Bad tokenomics can be recognised when insiders hold large stakes they will soon be allowed to sell.
From the familiar world
A company's capital structure: how many shares exist, how many does management hold, are there lock-ups after the IPO, does the company plan capital increases? The same questions, just for tokens.
An example
Bitcoin has the simplest tokenomics: a 21 million cap, a fixed issuance rate, halving every four years, no pre-allocation to founders. Many projects are far more complex and less transparent.
Why it matters
Knowing the tokenomics answers a question clients often ask: "Can they just print more of it?" For Bitcoin the answer is no, for many other tokens it is yes.
