Stablecoin
A stablecoin is a token that mirrors the value of a traditional currency such as the US dollar or the euro, usually 1:1.
Explained simply
Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin fluctuate heavily. For payments and trading, however, you need a stable unit. Stablecoins solve this: for every token an issuer holds a dollar or euro in reserve (in cash or short-dated government bonds) and issues a token against it.
The token then moves like any blockchain unit: worldwide, in seconds, around the clock. Its value, however, stays pegged to the currency.
The quality of the reserve is decisive. Reputable issuers have it audited regularly; in the EU this has been mandatory since MiCA.
From the familiar world
A casino chip: you exchange euros for chips, play with chips and exchange them back at the end. The chip is only worth what the casino actually holds in its cash desk. For a stablecoin the cash desk is the issuer's audited reserve.
An example
The two largest dollar stablecoins together have well over 200 billion US dollars in circulation. They settle daily payment volumes comparable to large card networks.
Why it matters
Stablecoins are the part of the crypto world moving fastest into traditional finance: payment providers, banks and card schemes are integrating them. For the client this is the "digital dollar" without the currency's own price risk, but with issuer risk.
