An AI agent is an AI system that does not just answer but independently completes multi-step tasks: researching, operating tools, making decisions, triggering actions.
Explained simply
A chatbot answers a question and waits. An agent is given a goal ("Book me the cheapest train to Berlin on Tuesday") and works through the necessary steps itself: fetch the timetable, compare, book, confirm.
To do so the agent can operate programs and services, check results and try again if needed. Companies deploy agents for customer service, accounting and software development.
Open questions concern liability, control and how an agent may pay. This is exactly where AI and blockchain touch.

The difference between an information desk and a personal assistant: the desk answers questions, the assistant carries out the errand and reports back when done.
An example
