A smart contract is a program on the blockchain that executes an agreement automatically once the conditions are met.
Explained simply
The name is a bit misleading: a smart contract is neither particularly smart nor a contract in the legal sense. It is a small program that sits on the blockchain and works on the pattern "if X, then Y".
Because the program runs on the blockchain, nobody can secretly alter or halt it once started. All parties can see the code and know what will happen.
That allows payments, transfers of ownership or distributions to be automated without one party having to trust the other.
From the familiar world
A vending machine: money in, press the button, bottle out. No salesperson, no negotiation, no exceptions. The machine applies the rule rigidly. A smart contract is such a machine for money and rights.
An example
A tokenised money market fund distributes income to all unit holders automatically every day via smart contract. No paying agent, no record date, no manual booking.
Why it matters
Smart contracts are why blockchains can do more than transfer money. Tokenisation, decentralised finance applications and digital securities are built on them. One risk remains: errors in the code are hard to correct afterwards.
