Fractional ownership
Fractional ownership means a large asset is divided into many small units that can be held and traded individually.
Explained simply
An office building, an artwork or a classic car is too expensive for individual investors and cannot be divided. As tokens, any asset can be split into thousands of pieces, each transferable individually.
The principle is old: funds and public companies do nothing else. What is new is that the splitting becomes possible without a fund company and at very low cost, because the blockchain keeps the register.
From the familiar world
An open-ended real estate fund: thousands of investors jointly hold office buildings, each according to their share. Tokenised fractional ownership is the same principle, just more direct, divisible into smaller pieces and faster to trade.
An example
A winery puts a vintage into circulation as 10,000 tokens. Investors hold shares in the stock, and when the bottles are sold the proceeds flow back pro rata.
Why it matters
Fractional ownership is why tokenisation can change access to previously exclusive asset classes (private equity, infrastructure, art). For advisers it is a concrete image clients grasp immediately.
