Tokenised funds
A tokenised fund is a normal investment fund whose units are issued and transferred as tokens on a blockchain.
Explained simply
The fund itself remains a regulated fund with a management company, depositary and prospectus. Only the unit certificates are digital: they sit as tokens in the investor's wallet or with their custodian.
Advantages: subscriptions and redemptions can be settled in minutes instead of days, distributions run automatically, and the fund is transferable around the clock.
The largest examples so far are money market funds, because their units are in demand as an "interest-bearing stablecoin" within the blockchain world.
From the familiar world
Today a fund unit in your account is a book entry at your custodian bank, which in turn books with the central depository. In a tokenised fund the unit is a token, and the chain of bookings shrinks to a single entry.
An example
The largest tokenised money market fund of a US asset manager reached a volume of several billion dollars within a year of launch. Distributions are paid daily straight into investors' wallets.
Why it matters
Tokenised funds are the format in which tokenisation becomes most concrete for advisers and clients: familiar product, familiar regulation, new settlement. It shows the fund industry itself is adopting the technology.
