RWA (real world assets)
RWA stands for real assets such as government bonds, real estate or commodities that are traded as tokens on the blockchain.
Explained simply
Within the crypto world, "RWA" has become the umbrella term for anything with value outside the blockchain that gets tokenised. The largest segment so far is short-dated US Treasuries and money market funds.
The reason: anyone holding capital on the blockchain, say in stablecoins, wants to invest it at interest without leaving the blockchain. Tokenised bonds deliver exactly that.
RWA is therefore where traditional asset classes move into the blockchain world.
From the familiar world
When online brokers emerged, it was first about shares, then funds, bonds and savings plans were added. RWA is the same expansion of the range, just on blockchain rails.
An example
Tokenised US Treasuries and money market funds reached a volume in the tens of billions by 2025, offered among others by the world's largest asset managers.
Why it matters
RWA is proof that tokenisation is not theory but is happening with real billions. For clients it is the most tangible example: "the same government bond, a new rail".
