Volatility measures how strongly a price fluctuates; for cryptocurrencies it is many times higher than for shares or bonds.
Explained simply
Volatility is the range within which a price typically moves. High volatility means large swings up and down, often within a short time.
Bitcoin has lost more than 70 percent from its high several times in its history and recovered afterwards. That is not a malfunction but part of the asset class as long as it is young and not yet widely held.
Volatility cannot be switched off but can be managed: through position size, satellite rather than core allocation, and a long time horizon.
From the familiar world
Sea conditions: an ocean liner and a sailing boat cross the same sea, but the sailing boat feels every wave. Crypto is the sailing boat. Knowing that, you pack accordingly and do not sail out with your entire fortune.
An example
In one year Bitcoin rose by more than 150 percent, in the following year it fell by over 60 percent. Both within 24 months.
Why it matters
Volatility is the most important risk warning and at the same time the sceptics' most frequent argument. Naming it honestly and answering with position size is more credible than playing it down.
